Apple has done it again, with the announcement of some great products that are sure to excite Apple fans and those due for an upgrade. But what features and upgrades can we expect from these devices? Apple Keynote videos can be long, and some of us just want a summary of the new products released from the Cupertino giant. Let’s run down exactly what Apple introduced last night!

Watch OS 4

Coming on September 19th, the latest iteration of the Watch OS is expected to introduce features such as a new heart rate app, monitoring various aspects of pulse and heart rate when resting or during activity. This has been introduced with Apple’s heart study program, to measure heart activity.

Apple Watch Series 3

It may look the same as the outgoing model, but the Apple Watch Series 3 coming on September 22 introduces one big difference; built-in cellular. This allows the watch to run on mobile networks like your mobile phone does. This lets you take calls on your iPhone’s phone number and run third party apps and Apple Music streaming through the device. Aside from this, a new processor allows for far greater performance and Siri functionality without your iPhone. Despite being offered with cellular access, the Series 3 watch will also be sold without this function at a lower price point.

Apple TV 4K

As the name implies, the new Apple TV will support 4K HDR resolution for the first time in Apple TV’s history. 4K resolution allows higher image quality on 4K TV’s, while HDR allows for greater depth in colours on 4K HDR TV sets. To add further great news, Apple has stated that 4K content on the iTunes movie store will not be sold at a higher price over the current HD content listed. Previously purchased HD content will be upgraded to 4K for free.

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus

It may be a similar device to the outgoing iPhone 7, but these new models are now manufactured with glass front and rear enclosures. The glass back allows for wireless charging, and while on the topic of charging, a new fast charge feature has been introduced to achieve 50% battery in only 30 minutes. The device is still water resistant but the device now has a two tone display for greater image quality, louder speakers and a new processor allowing for greater performance. The new camera not only improves image quality, but also hosts a new feature called portrait lighting. This feature allows portrait photographs to be taken with lighting effects in real time. Further improvements have been made to the video camera meaning your videos will look better in 4K resolution.

iPhone X

Perhaps named to commemorate 10 years of iPhone, the iPhone X is shaping up to be the hottest device at last night’s keynote. The device shares all features of the iPhone 8 but gets more added to it. The glass display reaches to all edges of the phone, this is complemented by a 5.8” Super OLED display. This means the device can display a more vivid range of colours at a higher resolution. Because the display is edge to edge, the home button is no more on this device. Instead, the user swipes up from the bottom of the screen to gesture a home button action. The notch at the top of the screen hosts equipment that allows for Face ID. This feature replaces Touch ID on separate iPhone models. Using facial recognition technology, the device can securely and quickly use your face to unlock the device in all conditions.  The front camera used for Face ID also support a new feature exclusive to this device known as an Animoji. Using facial mapping, an animated emoji of your facial expression can be created.
